1995 – 2002

Diplomphysiker, University of Stuttgart, Germany

This is a postgraduate degree in physics at masters level. The requirements include a 12 months research project and a written thesis (60 pages).

The topic of my thesis was ‘Simulationen von dispersivem Transport im Hinblick auf Strukturevolution in porösen Medien’ (‘Simulations of dispersive transport and structural evolution in porous media’).

As part of the research project, I simulated the transport of tracer particles along the streamlines of fluid flowing inside a porous medium (e.g. flow of oil and water in rock). The simulations were carried out on clusters of distributed workstations (Linux, DEC Alpha) as well as supercomputers (Cray, Hitachi). The aim was to find out whether the usual approach of describing geological transport processes with a dispersion equation is justified, and it was found that - at least for zero velocity boundary conditions - this is not the case.

Apart from the general 5 year curriculum, I also took exams in nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics. Also, as a physicist, I am educated in mathematics and the foundations of chemistry and have gained practical experience in the design and use of all sorts of electronic devices and circuits.
